1880‐1966
German researcher of Mongolian and Sinology. Born in Berlin, he studied Chinese, Mongolian, Manchu and other languages at the University of Berlin, earning his doctorate in 1913. In 1920 he became a professor of Manchu and Mongolian at the University of Berlin, and in 1925 he became head professor of the Chinese department at the University of Leipzig, and in 1932 he became head professor of the Chinese department at the University of Berlin. After World War II, in 1947 he became a professor of Chinese at the University of Munich, and worked to revive research in Oriental studies in Germany. During this time he traveled to China twice and also to Mongolia.

ドイツのモンゴル学，中国学の研究者。ベルリンに生まれ，ベルリン大学で中国語，モンゴル語，満州語などを学び，1913年博士号を獲得，20年からベルリン大学で満州語，モンゴル語の教授となり，25年ライプチヒ大学中国研究室の主任教授，32年ベルリン大学中国研究室主任教授となった。第2次大戦後の47年ミュンヘン大学の中国語教授となり，ドイツの東洋学研究の復興に努めた。この間中国に2回旅行し，モンゴルにも旅行した。
