…Critics such as Louis Vauxcelles denounced this trend as a tarnishment of the honorable traditions of European art, but Apollinaire and Salmon, successors of the Symbolist literary movement whose artistic goal was social reform, defended and supported it, and united it into a positive movement. Cubism consisted of the group of the Bateau lavoir, which included Picasso, Braque, and Gris, and the Puteaux group (so named because Villon's studio was in Puteaux, a western suburb of Paris), which was centered around the painter Jacques Villon (1875-1963, real name Gaston Duchamp). The former logically explored and deepened the aesthetic possibilities of this style, but was indifferent to movements such as mass demonstrations, while it was the latter that led the development of Cubism as a movement and gained many sympathizers both at home and abroad. …
