The Japanese name for the lacquerware technique called "Tenshitsu" which was created in China in the early Ming Dynasty (around the 15th century). It is also written as "Zonsei". In the description of Chinese carved lacquerware in "Kundaikansochoki", a secret book on Chinese art appreciation and room decorations in the shoin style during the Muromachi period, it says, "There is something called "Zonsei", which comes in both red and black and is carved like gold leaf, and is very rare." This shows that it was respected as an imported product in Japan at the latest in the early 16th century and used for tea utensils, but the origin of the name "Zonsei" is unknown. This technique involves drawing a pattern on a lacquered surface with colored lacquer, and then carving lines with a knife, slightly thick along the outline of the pattern and thin above the pattern, but this technique does not remain in China today. In Japan, Tamakaji Zokoku of the Takamatsu domain developed a style of lacquerware called Zokoku-nuri that imitated this technique at the end of the Edo period, and Kagawa lacquerware has continued this tradition, producing trays, confectionery bowls, tea ceremony utensils, flower vases, low tables, and other items.
