The process of removing harmful and polluting substances from wastewater discharged from factories and other businesses. In order to protect the quality of public waters, wastewater from factories and other businesses must be purified to standards set by the Water Pollution Control Act and prefectural ordinances before being discharged. For this reason, various treatment methods have been developed depending on the type and content of the wastewater, but they can be broadly divided into four categories: solid-liquid separation, physicochemical treatment, biological treatment, and thermal treatment. The purpose of solid-liquid separation is to separate and recover suspended solids in the wastewater.

工場や事業所などから排出される廃(排)水中の有害物質や汚濁物質を除去する操作。公共水域の水質保全のために，工場や事業所から出される排水は〈水質汚濁防止法〉や都道府県条令などに定められた基準まで浄化して排水しなければならない。そのために廃水の種類や内容に応じて各種の処理法が開発されているが，大別すると，固液分離，物理化学的処理，生物学的処理，熱処理の四つとなる。　固液分離は，廃水中の浮遊物を分離回収することを目的としている。
