…Most cherry trees are sun-loving and many of them grow quickly, forming secondary forests, making them suitable for cultivation at home. Many horticultural varieties have been developed from these wild species, and the number is said to be between 200 and 300. Cultivated double-flowered cherry trees have been known since the Nara period, but it was only in the Edo period that cherry varieties began to be recorded in detail, with 40 varieties listed in Mizuno Motokatsu's Kadan Komoku (1681). Since then, many illustrated guides to cherry trees have been published, including Matsuoka Gentatsu's Igansai Ohin (1758), which lists 69 varieties, and Sakurai Sessen's Kafu, Zoku Kafu Vol. 1 and 2, Mata Zoku Kafu, and Kafu Supplement (1803-04), which are compiled by Ichihashi Chosho and illustrated by Sakurai Sessen. …
