Yamauchi clan

Yamauchi clan
Fujiwara clan. They are said to be descendants of Hidesato and descendants of the Yamauchi Sudo clan. They lived in Yamauchi, Kamakura-go, Sagami Province, and took the name Yamauchi. They first served the Minamoto clan, then under Tsunetoshi they belonged to the Oba clan, and later followed Yoritomo. During the Sengoku period, under Moritoyo they moved to Owari and served Oda Nobuyasu, and his son Kazutoyo served Nobunaga. After the Honnoji Incident, they followed Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and in 1590 they were given 50,000 koku of land in Kakegawa, Totomi Province. They belonged to the eastern army in the Battle of Sekigahara, and after the war they were given an additional 240,000 koku of land in Kochi, Tosa, and were appointed Tosa no Kami. In 1610 they received the surname Matsudaira, and from then on they were made a marquis in the Meiji period. A branch of the Yamauchi clan of Kochi Shinden was made a viscount in the Meiji period.

藤原姓。秀郷の子孫山内首藤の流という。相模国鎌倉郷山内に住し,山内氏を称したという。初め源氏に仕え,経俊のとき大庭氏に属し,のち頼朝に従った。戦国時代,盛豊のとき尾張に移って織田信安に仕え,その子一豊は信長に仕えた。本能寺の変後,豊臣秀吉に従い,天正 18 (1590) 年遠江掛川5万石を領した。関ヶ原の戦いには東軍に属し,戦後,土佐高知 24万石を加増され土佐守に叙した。慶長 15 (1610) 年松平姓を受け,以来明治にいたり侯爵。分家の高知新田山内氏は明治にいたって子爵。
