Ishikari Mountains

Japanese:
Ishikari Mountains

Located in central Hokkaido, this mountain range includes the Taisetsu-Tokachi volcanic group, the Ishikari Central Mountains, and the Shikaribetsu volcanic group. It faces the Kamikawa and Furano basins to the west, and together with the Kitami Mountains to the north and the Hidaka Mountains to the south, it forms the backbone of Hokkaido. It was formed primarily by folding, with the volcanoes resting on top of it. The river valleys of the Ishikari River, Tokoro River, Toshibetsu River, and Sorachi River generally separate it from other mountain ranges. The Ishikari Central Mountains have Mt. Ishikari (1,967 meters) as their highest peak, and the main mountain ridge runs east to west, with Mt. Otofuke, Mt. Uni Ishikari, and Mt. Mikuni to the east, and Mt. Numanohara to the west, forming the border between Ishikari and Tokachi provinces. The area is dominated by the Palaeozoic Hidaka Group, but Mt. Otofuke and Mt. Uni Ishikari have exposed granite at the base, and Mt. Numanohara and other areas contain andesite and Tertiary layers. Most of the area is designated as part of Daisetsuzan National Park, with large areas of special protection zones, and although the tree line is exceeded at altitudes of 1,500 meters or higher, the area is generally covered with natural forests consisting mainly of conifers.
