Elias Ashmole

A British antiquarian, he was particularly fond of collecting alchemical documents, and is famous for compiling the British Chemical Exhibition. This book, which contains the Alchemical Formulae by G. Ripley, a prominent 15th-century alchemical philosopher, and T. Norton's Alchemical Synthesis and other poems, was published in London in 1652. However, a book on the alchemical "Philosopher's Stone" had already been published in Frankfurt around 1602 under the name of the Chemical Exhibition, and Ashmole's work can be considered the British version of that.

イギリスの古物収集家。とくに錬金術文献収集の好事家で，《イギリス化学の展覧会堂》の編纂者として有名。15世紀のすぐれた錬金術的哲学者リプリーG.Ripleyの《錬金術式目》やノートンT.Nortonの《錬金術の合成》その他の詩編を収めたこの書は，1652年にロンドンで出版された。しかしすでに錬金術関係の〈賢者の石〉にまつわる書が，《化学展覧会堂》の名のもとに1602年ころフランクフルトで出版されており，アシュモールのものはいわばそのイギリス版といえよう。
