An old city occupying the southern tip of Amakusa Shimoshima Island in Kumamoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. Ushibuka Port, a good submerged port, is a base for coastal fishing in central Kyushu, with a large catch of sardines, horse mackerel, and mackerel. In recent years, a new large fishing port has been completed, and facilities for a marine product distribution and processing base are under construction. Sea bream, yellowtail, and other fish are also farmed. Mandarin oranges and ponkan oranges are cultivated in the hilly areas. Most of the area belongs to Unzen-Amakusa National Park, and includes the underwater park of Gesu Island, Ryusen Island (one island, a scenic spot and natural monument), and Rokurojiyama (scenic spot). The Ushibuka Haiyabushi song is famous. A high-speed ferry connects to Minamata Port. The Amakusa-Kagoshima National Highway Ferry is in service, and the city has close ties with Kagoshima Prefecture. In March 2006, Hondo City merged with the towns of Ariake, Goshoura, Kuratake, Sumimoto, Shinwa, Itsuwa, Amakusa, and Kawaura in Amakusa County to form Amakusa City. Area: ^{89.75 km2} . 熊本県天草下島南端部を占める旧市。1954年市制。沈水海岸の良港牛深港は九州中部の沿岸漁業根拠地で，イワシ，アジ，サバの漁獲が多く，近年は新大型漁港も完成し，水産物流通加工基地の施設整備が進行中。タイ，ブリなどの養殖も行われる。丘陵地ではミカン，ポンカン栽培が盛ん。大部分が雲仙天草国立公園に属し，下須(げす)島の海中公園，竜仙島（片島。名勝・天然記念物），六郎次山（名勝）がある。牛深ハイヤ節は有名。水俣港と高速船が結ぶ。天草鹿児島国道フェリーが就航し，鹿児島県との関係が密接。2006年３月，本渡市，天草郡有明町，御所浦町，倉岳町，栖本町，新和町，五和町，天草町，河浦町と合併し市制，天草市となる。89.75km²。１万8588人（2003）。
