Nitten Exhibition

Japanese:
Nitten Exhibition

A comprehensive art organization. An abbreviation for Japan Art Exhibition. Its predecessor dates back to the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition (Bunten), which was held in 1907 (Meiji 40). This was the first government-sponsored exhibition in Japan, implemented as part of the government's art promotion policy, and had a major impact on the Meiji art world. In 1916 (Taisho 8), the Teikoku Bijutsuin was founded, and the exhibition became the Teiten (Imperial Art Academy Art Exhibition). It was reorganized by Minister of Education Matsuda in 1935 (Showa 10), and succeeded by the Shinbunten in 1937. After World War II, in 1946 (Showa 21), it was renamed Nitten (Japan Art Exhibition). In 1949, as the postwar democratization policy was progressing, it became a semi-official exhibition co-sponsored by the Japan Art Academy and the Nitten Management Association, and in 1958 it adopted an incorporated association structure and became a purely private organization. In 1969, the organization was restructured to encourage the advancement of new generations of artists and to revamp the executive officers in charge of operations, and as of 2000, the 32nd exhibition has been held, but as the largest comprehensive art organization in Japan, it still has the character of being in the field but not in the field, and the overall trend is still for moderate styles to be mainstream. With five categories of Japanese painting, Western painting, sculpture, craft art, and calligraphy, it holds an open exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum every November, which attracts the highest number of visitors of any group exhibition.
