British newspaper owner. He started managing newspapers in 1888, and launched the Daily Mail in 1896 and the Daily Mirror in 1903, succeeding in popularizing newspapers (penny papers) through a cheap, high-volume sales strategy. In 1908 he bought The Times and became its owner. During World War I he was in charge of anti-enemy propaganda, making full use of the newspapers under his control.
