Located in the north of Nagasaki Prefecture, Hirado City includes Hirado Island, the surrounding islands of Takushima, Azuchi Oshima, Ikitsuki Island, and the Tabira district on the opposite shore. It was incorporated as a city in 1955. The city center, Hirado, is located at the northeastern end of Hirado Island, and faces Tabira Town (now Hirado City) on the Kita Matsuura Peninsula across the Hirado Strait, and is connected to it by the Hirado Bridge. The Ikitsuki Bridge was completed in 1991 between Hirado and Ikitsuki Island in the northwest. Hirado Port is a good natural harbor, and it prospered through trade with Portugal, the Netherlands, and other countries from the time Portuguese ships arrived in 1550 until Japan was isolated from the rest of the world. In the early modern period, it was the castle town of the Matsuura clan. There are the remains of the Dutch trading post (historic site), the remains of the British trading post, Christian remains, monuments to Xavier and Miura Anjin, the Spectacles Bridge of Saiwai Bridge, and the Matsuura Historical Museum. The coast is full of curves and there are many good fishing ports, sea bream and flying fish fishing, seafood processing, and cattle breeding are also thriving. Furue Bay and Shijiki Bay belong to Saikai National Park. In October 2005, Ikitsuki Town, Tabira Town, and Oshima Village of Kitamatsuura County were incorporated. 235.08 km2 . Population 34,905 (2010).

長崎県北部,平戸島と周辺の度(たく)島,的山(あづち)大島,生月島及び対岸の田平地区などを含む市。1955年市制。中心市街の平戸は平戸島北東端にあって平戸瀬戸を隔てて北松浦半島の田平町(現・平戸市)と対し,平戸大橋で結ばれる。北西に位置する生月(いきつき)島との間には,1991年生月大橋が完成。平戸港は天然の良港で,1550年のポルトガル船入港から鎖国に至るまでポルトガル,オランダなどとの貿易で繁栄,近世は松浦氏の城下町であった。オランダ商館跡(史跡),イギリス商館跡,キリシタン遺跡,ザビエルや三浦按針の記念碑,眼鏡橋の幸橋,松浦史料博物館などがある。海岸は屈曲に富み良漁港が多く,タイ・トビウオ漁,水産加工などが行われ,牛の飼育も盛ん。古江湾,志々伎(しじき)湾などは西海国立公園に属する。2005年10月北松浦郡生月町,田平町,大島村を編入。235.08km2。3万4905人(2010)。
