...Hagi was a kosode worn over the head to hide the face when walking outdoors, and not only women but also men wore it when it was cold and chilly, but the cotton hat also has the same meaning as the higi. It was called hitaiwata, katsugiwata, and ageboshi, and was named after the way it was worn, as in the eboshi headgear worn by men in the Middle Ages, which was made of neem silk and folded over the head. …被衣は野外を歩くとき，頭からすっぽりと小袖をかぶって顔を隠すために用いたもので，女子のみでなく男子も寒涼の際にはこの姿をして外出したが，綿帽子にも被衣と同様の意味が含まれている。ひたい綿，かつぎ綿，揚（あげ）帽子などの名があり，帽子の呼称は，かぶる状態が中世の男子の被り物烏帽子（えぼし）のように，練絹でつくられたものを折り曲げてかぶったことなどによる。近世になり女髷（おんなまげ）が結われるようになると，髷のちり除けとして，真綿を木型で伸ばし髷にかけて用いるようになり，嫁入りの際，文金高島田の髷と花嫁の顔も隠す形式に変化した。…
