…An ancient kingdom that existed in what is now Senegal in West Africa from around the 14th century to the mid-16th century. The Wolof people, whose main habitat today is Senegal, also have ancestors who lived in the former Kingdom of Ghana, which is now the area from Mauritania to Mali. When Islam was introduced by the Almoravid dynasty in the 11th century, they are thought to have rebelled against it and migrated south to Senegal.

...On the other hand, black tribes live in the Senegal River basin in the south. The largest of these are the Toucoulou people who live in the middle valley of the Senegal River, followed by the Sarakole (also known as Soninke) on the border with Mali, and the Wolof in the lower Senegal River basin. All of them are agricultural peoples who cultivate millet, corn, groundnuts, etc., and also cultivate rice using irrigation.
