The valley of the Urayama River flows into the Arakawa River near Chichibu Railway Urayamguchi Station, at the southern end of the Chichibu Basin in western Saitama Prefecture. For 5km upstream from the confluence, the area is blessed with natural beauty created by the clear stream and the V-shaped valley with steep cliffs carved into the hard chert of the Chichibu Palaeozoic Formation, and there are also campsites and fishing spots, making it a popular destination. The Urayam Power Station, which takes water from the Urayam Arch Dam, was built in 1920 and was the first power station in the prefecture. About 1.2km upstream from Urayamguchi Station is the multi-purpose Urayam Dam (total storage capacity 50 million m3). [Arai Juro]
