The book was reprinted in 1515 and 1519, and in 1867 Charles de Coster (1827-79) reimagined Eulenspiegel as a fighter for the liberation of the Netherlands, born in Damme, Flanders, in his "Ullenspiegel and the Good-natured Gedzak." In the area that is now Belgium, from the Middle Ages through the 16th and 17th centuries, there was a remarkable activity in the fields of art and music, supported by the development of cities, but after that cultural activity stagnated, and it was only after independence in 1830 that French-language literature (although most of the writers were of Flemish descent) achieved worldwide fame. The pioneer of this was Charles De Coster (1827-79) (Legends and Adventures of Eulenspiegel), and from 1881 onwards, Verhaeren, Rodenbach, Maeterlinck and others in the magazine Jeune Belgique, who also had contact with Symbolist painters, created the heyday of French literature. In Flemish literature, Hendrik Conscience (1812-83) awakened the Flemish people with his historical novel The Lion of Flanders (1838), and Hezele was also famous for his lyric poetry.
