Kanroku - Kanroku

Date of birth and death unknown. A 7th century Baekje (Korea) monk. He came to Japan in October 602 (the 10th year of the reign of Empress Suiko) and presented a calendar, a book on astronomy and geography, and a book on Tonko (magic). In April 624, when a monk hit his grandfather with an axe, the emperor reprimanded him and gathered monks and nuns from various temples to question him and punish the evil monks and nuns. At that time, Kanroku petitioned the emperor to pardon all monks and nuns except for the evil monks, as monks and nuns were not yet adapted to the precepts, and he was pardoned. After that, an imperial decree was issued to appoint a Sojo (abbot) and Sozu (councillor) to supervise the monks and nuns, and Kanroku was appointed as the first Sojo (abbot), according to the Nihon Shoki.

生没年不詳。7世紀の百済(くだら)（朝鮮）の僧。602年（推古天皇10）10月来日し、このとき、暦本、天文地理書、遁甲(とんこう)（妖術(ようじゅつ)）方術書を献じた。624年4月、一僧が斧(おの)で祖父を殴る事件が起こると、天皇はこれをとがめ、諸寺の僧尼を集めて推問し、悪逆の僧および諸僧尼を罰せんとした。その際、観勒は上表して、僧尼はまだ戒法になじまないとして悪逆の僧以外をことごとく許すよう願い、許された。その後、詔(みことのり)によって僧正(そうじょう)、僧都(そうず)を置き、僧尼を検校(けんぎょう)（監督）することとなり、観勒が最初の僧正に就任したと『日本書紀』に伝える。
