Gozen Tachibana - Gozen Tachibana

Japanese: ゴゼンタチバナ - ごぜんたちばな
Gozen Tachibana - Gozen Tachibana

A small evergreen perennial plant of the Cornaceae family (APG classification: Cornaceae). It is 5-15 cm tall and has a long, slender underground stem. The leaves are elliptical, with six in whorls. The flowers bloom in July and August in a terminal head in great numbers. The inflorescence has four white petal-like involucres. The drupes ripen red. The name comes from Gozenmine in Mt. Hakusan, Ishikawa Prefecture, where it was discovered, and from its red fruit, which resembles the Karatachibana of the Primulaceae family. It grows under coniferous forests in the subalpine forests from Hokkaido to Honshu, and is distributed in Karafuto (Sakhalin), the Kuril Islands, Kamchatka, the Korean Peninsula, and North America. The closely related species, Ezogozentachibana C. suecica L., does not have whorls of leaves and has purple flowers. It grows on the plains of eastern Hokkaido. Its distribution area is wider than that of the Japanese knotweed, and it also grows in Siberia and Europe.
