1522‐57 Margrave of Brandenburg-Krumbach, Germany. Reigned 1541-54. Raised as a Lutheran, he was indifferent to religion and initially sided with the imperial faction in the Schmalkaldic War, but later drew closer to the anti-imperial faction. In 1553, in an attempt to establish dominance in the Franconia region, he attacked the Bishop of Bamberg and others, but was defeated by the army of the princes under the leadership of Moritz, Duke of Saxony, and lost his territory in 1554. He was something of a mercenary captain during the Reformation. [Kenjiro Nakamura] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
