Serpentine - jamongan (English spelling) serpentinite, serpentine

Japanese: 蛇紋岩 - じゃもんがん(英語表記)serpentinite, serpentine
Serpentine - jamongan (English spelling) serpentinite, serpentine
Agricola used the term serpentaria to refer to ophite and possibly ophicalcite [Agricola: 1546]. Serpentine is a rock whose main component is serpentine, and is generally believed to have been formed by hydrothermal alteration of peridotite. Serpentine is treated as an ultramafic rock, but it is also considered a metamorphic rock, as it is a later transformation of existing peridotite [Eskola: 1939]. Because serpentine was thought to be an altered form of peridotite, it was not used as an independent rock, and was called serpentine-rock or simply serpentine [Harker: 1908]. Although the term serpentinization existed, the rock name serpentine was not used [Tyrell: 1926]. In the representative textbooks of the time, the name serpentine was never used to refer to igneous rocks [Shand: 1927, Tröger: 1935, Johannsen: 1938, Barth: 1952]. Later, serpentine was used as a rock name, but the same name as the mineral serpentine, serpentine, was used for the rock [Hess: 1955]. In 1936, Lodochnikov proposed the name serpentinite as a rock name, but it was not commonly used [Lodochnikov: 1936]. At the time, serpentine and serpentine were distinguished as serpentine-rock and serpentine-mineral, and the term serpentinite was not used in its present meaning until Turner and others [Turner & Verhoogen: 1951, Williams, Turner & Gilbert: 1954]. Nowadays, a clear distinction is made between the mineral serpentine and the rock serpentinite. The Latin word serpens means snake-like. The Japanese word serpentine was used by Wada Ishiro in 1878 [Utashiro et al.: 1978].
