Archbishop of Milan who strongly promoted Catholic reform. Born into an Italian noble family from Arona, he was appointed papal secretary, cardinal and Archbishop of Milan by his maternal uncle, Pope Pius IV, in 1560, and received the priest and bishopric in 1563. While practicing severe asceticism throughout his life, he made great contributions to the promotion of the Third Session of the Council of Trent and the Catholic reform movement, the promotion of learning, the establishment of the Catechism, relief for the poor and sick, and the renewal of pastoral care and education. カトリック改革を強力に推進したミラノ大司教。アロナのイタリア貴族出身で，1560年母方の伯父ピウス4世教皇により教皇秘書，枢機卿，ミラノ大司教に任命され，63年に司祭位と司教位を受ける。生涯厳しい苦行を実践しつつ，トリエント公会議第3会期とカトリック改革運動の推進，教学の振興，公教要理の制定，貧病者の救済，司牧･教育の刷新等に大いに寄与した。1610年に列聖された。【青山玄】
