Born into an Italian noble family from Arona, he was appointed papal secretary, cardinal and Archbishop of Milan by his maternal uncle, Pope Pius IV, in 1560, and received the priest and bishopric in 1563. While practicing severe asceticism throughout his life, he made great contributions to the promotion of the Third Session of the Council of Trent and the Catholic reform movement, the promotion of learning, the establishment of the Catechism, relief for the poor and sick, and the renewal of pastoral care and education.
