The name of the God of Israel revealed to the prophet Moses. It is also called Yahveh or Jehovah. It is said to have four letters because it is written with four Hebrew consonants (Hebrew usually has three consonants). It is said to mean "He who is," "He who is with," "He who makes it happen," etc., but there is no consensus. There is also a theory that it is the god of the Kenites, the family of Moses' wife, where he took refuge, but this is doubtful. It is a god unique to Israel, and it seems to have been known before Moses. The Jews did not speak of Yahweh out of excessive respect, calling him instead Adonai (my Lord), and the Septuagint also translated it as Kyrios (Lord). After the fall of Jerusalem in 70, the correct pronunciation of the four letters that had been handed down to the high priests was lost along with them, which also led to the four letters being read only as Adonai. In Christianity, the pronunciation "Yahweh" is often used. (→ Tetragrammaton ) Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
