The aforementioned census announced that there were 2.2 million Old Believers and those belonging to various sects, but the actual number is thought to be much higher. Old Believers or Old Rites are Orthodox who did not accept the liturgical reforms of Patriarch Nikon in the mid-17th century and separated from the state church. They are also called Raskolniki (separatists). They firmly adhered to the religious rites and patriarchal system that had existed since the days of Moscow Russia, and did not bend to their principles even in the face of repeated oppression and persecution by the government and the state church.
