Gosho Heinosuke - Gosho Heinosuke

Film director. Born in Tokyo on February 1, 1902. Graduated from Keio Gijuku Business and Industrial School. Joined Shochiku Kamata Studio in 1923 (Taisho 12). After working as an assistant to director Shimazu Yasujiro, he was promoted to director in 1925, and was recognized for his films Shameful Dream and Trick Girl in 1927 (Showa 2), and highly praised for the detailed cinematic expression of The Village Bride in 1928. In 1931, he successfully sketched the life of the common man with Madame and the Wife, Japan's first full-scale feature film made using a domestic talkie, and thereafter showed his true worth in works that looked warmly and lyrically at the lives of ordinary people. His main works in the 1930s and 1940s include the silent version of "The Dancer of Izu" (1933), starring Tanaka Kinuyo, "Life's Burden" (1935), "The Song of the Flower Basket" (1937), "Tree and Stone" (1940), and "Fresh Snow" (1942). After World War II, he returned with "Once Upon a Time" (1947), and worked in many genres until the 1968 puppet show "Meiji Spring and Autumn," but his most famous work is "A Place Where the Chimney Can Be Seen" (1953, won an award at the Berlin International Film Festival), which depicts the postwar social customs and the love and solidarity between two couples. He died on May 1, 1981.
