A haiku poet from the mid-Edo period. Shida. His pen names include Choshi, Asoan, and Takatsunoyao. He is counted as one of the Ten Philosophers of the Shomon School. He was born in Echizen (Fukui Prefecture), Fukui, and died in Kozu, Osaka. He was 79 years old. He went to Edo at a young age and became a clerk at an Echigoya. His first haiku, written under the pen name Noma, was in Zokuminashiguri, edited by Kikaku when he was 25, but his full-scale activities began in 1694 (Genroku 7), when he co-edited Sumidawara, a sack of charcoal, with fellow clerks Rigyū and Kokō. He was praised by Kyoriku as having "obtained a light and simple style that is in vogue" (Haiku Dialogue). His theories on haiku can be glimpsed in his writings such as "Sode Nikki" and "Choan Kusa Musubi". He is said to have over 1,000 disciples (nurewakaba), and his most famous works include "Kyo no Fushi" and "Hiroshima no Furittsu". His correspondence with Kyoriku was published in 1785 (Tenmei 5) by Shozan as "Kyoya Shosoku".
