…If we look at an old British “Sports Dictionary and Encyclopedia,” we can see that it was only at the end of the 19th century that “hunting” receded and “modern sports” came to account for more than half of the entries. It was through the modern Olympic movement that the meaning of the word “sport” was firmly established as “competitive sports.” Even so, the early modern Olympic Games were still held in simple sports facilities, and it was not until after the 1924 Paris Olympics that the proper sports facilities were established. …

...After that, a rapid succession of new sports ideas were created, with their peaks occurring in the early and late 1980s. Similarly, in Europe and the United States, as lifelong sports became more diverse, the development and systematization of a new sports culture separate from competitive sports progressed. It is important to note that the background to the emergence of new sports as a global trend can be attributed to two cultural trends that began to gain popularity in Europe and the United States in the late 1960s.
