[Born] 1436. Ferrara Died: 1478. Italian painter from Bologna. He was mainly active in Bologna, but from the style of his paintings at the time it can be inferred that he had trained in Florence in his early years. He is considered to be a member of the Ferrara School, where he was born, as he was influenced by the paintings of Andrea Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, and Cosme Tura, who influenced the establishment of his unique style. His most famous work is the series of murals (→ Lunar Calendar Paintings) he painted for Palazzo Schifanoia, the villa of Duke Borso d'Este, lord of Ferrara.
