Died: 1478. Italian painter from Bologna. He was mainly active in Bologna, but from the style of his paintings at the time it can be inferred that he had trained in Florence in his early years. He is considered to be a member of the Ferrara School, where he was born, as he was influenced by the paintings of Andrea Mantegna, Piero della Francesca, and Cosme Tura, who influenced the establishment of his unique style. His most famous work is the series of murals (→ Lunar Calendar Paintings) he painted for Palazzo Schifanoia, the villa of Duke Borso d'Este, lord of Ferrara.

イタリアの画家。おもにボローニャで活躍したが，初期にはフィレンツェで修業していたことが当時の画風から推測できる。個性的な画風の確立に影響を与えているのはアンドレア・マンテーニャおよびピエロ・デラ・フランチェスカやコズメ・トゥーラの絵画であるところから，出生地のフェララ派の画家とされる。最も有名な作品は，フェララの領主ボルソ・デステ公の別邸スキファノイア宮に描いた『月暦』連作壁画（→月暦画）。
