Miyazu [city] - Miyazu
A city in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. The central city area facing Miyazu Bay flourished from the mid-Edo period onwards as a castle town for the Honjo clan, a port of call on the Nishi-mawari shipping route, and a commercial port with a site for the Tango crepe weaving industry. It is a coastal fishing base, and industries such as nickel smelting, hosiery, and chemical fibers are also carried out. The Kitakinki Tango Railway runs through the city. The coast has many scenic spots such as Amanohashidate, and it is part of the Tango Amanohashidate Oeyama Quasi-National Park. There are many shrines listed in the Shikinaikan, including Konojinja Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Tango, Nariai-ji Temple, the 28th temple of the Thirty-Three Kannon Temples of the Western Provinces, Chion-ji Temple, known for Manjusri of Wisdom, and Fuchu Daijo-ji Temple, one of the birthplaces of Tango Geiko, and tourist facilities such as Seya Kogen Family Travel Village and Prefectural Tango Resort Park. 京都府北部の市。1954年市制。宮津湾に臨む中心市街は江戸中期以降本庄氏の城下町,西廻り航路の寄航地,丹後縮緬(ちりめん)機業地をひかえた商港として栄えた。沿岸漁業基地で,ニッケル製錬,メリヤス,化学繊維などの工業も行われる。北近畿タンゴ鉄道が通じる。海岸は天橋立など景勝地が多く,丹後天橋立大江山国定公園に属する。式内社で丹後一宮の籠(この)神社,西国三十三所観音霊場28番札所成相(なりあい)寺,智恵の文殊で知られる智恩(ちおん)寺,丹後迎講(げいこう)の発祥地の一つ府中大乗寺などがあり,世屋高原家族旅行村,府立丹後リゾート公園など観光施設も整備されている。172.74km2。1万9948人(2010)。→宮津
