A major life insurance company under the former Furukawa Group. Founded in 1888 as Teikoku Life Insurance Co., Ltd. at the suggestion of Navy Accountant Kato Tameshige. Reorganized as a joint-stock company in 1891. In the 1910s, it became a subsidiary of the Furukawa Zaibatsu to stabilize management. Merged with Toyo Life Insurance in 1935 and Maekawa Life Insurance in 1942. Relaunched as Asahi Mutual Life Insurance Co., Ltd. in 1947. Proclaimed "insured person first" and was one of the first to introduce the payroll deduction system for insurance premiums. It has a strong presence in the field of savings insurance. In 1997, it launched the "Second Four-Year Plan for the 21st Century" as a measure to liberalize insurance and prepare for the Big Bang. In 1999, it partnered with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co., a major American life insurance company. In 2000, it attempted to form a new insurance group with Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire Insurance, the largest non-life insurance company, but withdrew from the group in 2002. It has been working to improve its management by rebuilding its finances on its own. Headquartered in Tokyo. Total assets in 2011 were 5.6036 trillion yen, and insurance premiums and other income in the fiscal year ending March 2011 was 531.8 billion yen. 旧古河系の大手生命保険会社。1888年海軍主計官・加唐為重の発案により,(有)帝国生命保険として設立。1891年株式会社に改組。1910年代,経営安定のため古河財閥の傘下に入る。1935年に東洋生命,1942年に前川生命を合併。1947年,第2会社・朝日生命保険相互会社として再発足。〈被保険者第一主義〉を標榜し,保険料の給与天引き方式をいち早く導入。財形保険では確固たる地位を誇る。保険の自由化,ビッグバン対策として,1997年〈21世紀に向けた第二次4ヵ年計画〉をスタートした。1999年米大手生保のメトロポリタン・ライフ・インシュアランスと提携。2000年には損保最大手の東京海上などと新しい保険グループの結成を試みたが2002年に離脱し,独自の財務立直しで経営改善を進めている。本社東京。2011年総資産5兆6036億円,2011年3月期保険料等収入5318億円。
