Shinojima

Japanese:
Shinojima

An island located 3 km offshore from Morozaki Port in Minamichita Town, Chita District, at the southern tip of the Chita Peninsula in Aichi Prefecture. Its area is 0.93 square kilometers. It was once an independent village called Shinojima Village, but became part of Minamichita Town in 1961 (Showa 36). The entire island is made of Ryoke belt granite, with a maximum elevation of 48 meters. Of the nine islands, Koiso Island and Nakate Island were reclaimed and connected to Shinojima. In 1962, the island was provided with drinking water through an undersea water supply from the Aichi Waterworks, freeing it from its previous water scarcity. There are no rice paddies on the island, and people made their living solely from fishing, but the water supply has made tourism possible. Shinojima Port has long been a key maritime transportation point connecting Ise and Atsumi, and was used as a port to wait out the wind. There is an old story that in 1338 (Engen 3, Ryakuo 1), Prince Yoshiyoshi (later Emperor Gomurakami) stayed there for six months due to a storm and dug the "Imperial Well". There are many historical sites related to Sakanoue no Tamuramaro, Minamoto no Yoritomo, Saigyo, Tokugawa Ieyasu, and Kato Kiyomasa. As it was the territory of Ise Shrine, there is also a ceremony to dedicate a sacred wreck every year. The Shinojima Festival is held on the 3rd and 4th of the lunar New Year, when the god of Hachioji Shrine in Doyama crosses over to Shinmei Shrine in Kobe. The festival includes a dance based on ancient traditions and a Shinto ritual of "Koritori". It is included in the Mikawa Bay Quasi-National Park, and boats can be taken from Shizaki Port, Kawa Port, Irago Port, etc. Population 1890 (2009).
