A type of Kabuki kyogen. The main characters are servants of samurai families, or slaves of banner lords or townsfolk. Edo records from the Kanbun period (1661-73) include the roles of "Yakinoku" (slave) and "Ko-Yakinoku" (child slave), and many one-act plays with a yakinoku (slave) as the main character include "Jigoku Yakinoku" (Hell Slave), "Furo-Iri Yakinoku" (Bath Slave), "Yamaya Yakinoku" (Yanaka Slave), "Yakinoku Odori" (Slave Dance), and "Roppo with Yakinoku" (Roppo with Slave). Tamon Shōzaemon (years of birth and death unknown, active in Edo in the 1660s), who is said to have originated the performing techniques of "Tanzen" and "Rokkō", is also recorded as the first yakinoku (slave).
