Born: May 15, 1816 in Aachen Died: December 1, 1859, Düsseldorf. German painter. Studied in Düsseldorf, and produced murals, watercolors, and woodblock prints. He often took historical and biblical subjects into his work. His major works include "Portraits of Charles the Great" (1840-47, mural for Aachen City Hall), watercolor "Hannibal Crossing the Alps" (1842-44), and the woodblock series "Dance of Death".
