Maizuru Bay

A branch of Wakasa Bay facing the Sea of ​​Japan in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It is a ria-type submerged coastline, and the bay extends deep south between Cape Kanaga and Cape Bakuchi. The mouth of the bay is narrow, about 1 kilometer wide, but the interior is wide, and it is divided into East Maizuru Bay and West Maizuru Bay by Tojima at the mouth of the bay. Mountains on three sides protect the bay from winter seasonal winds, making it one of the best ports along the Sea of ​​Japan coast. In particular, West Maizuru Bay flourished as Tanabe Port in the castle town of Tanabe with the development of westward shipping during the Edo period. East Maizuru Bay developed as a military port after a naval base was established there in 1901 (Meiji 34). After World War II, the military land was converted into a Self-Defense Force base and was also used for factories.

京都府北部、日本海に臨む若狭(わかさ)湾の支湾。リアス式沈降海岸で、金ヶ岬と博奕(ばくち)岬の間より南に深く湾入する。湾口は幅約1キロメートルで狭いが、湾内は広く、湾口の戸島によって東舞鶴湾と西舞鶴湾に分かれる。三方の山地が冬の季節風を防ぎ、日本海沿岸では屈指の良港の一つであり、ことに西舞鶴湾は江戸時代西廻(まわ)り海運の発達に伴って、城下町田辺(たなべ)の田辺湊(みなと)として栄えた。東舞鶴湾は1901年（明治34）鎮守府が置かれて以来軍港として発展した。第二次世界大戦後、軍用地は自衛隊の基地に転用、また工場用地になった。
