Desa (English spelling)

Japanese: デサ（英語表記）desa

In Indonesia, the word means "village" in Java, Madura, and Bali. It is derived from the Sanskrit word deśa, which means region, and is thought to have been introduced to Java during the Mataram Dynasty (8th to 10th centuries). In Indonesian today, kampung generally means settlement, while desa is often used to mean administrative village. In 19th century Java, for which clear documentation exists, desa was a village community with a strong local character. Characteristics of desas at that time included joint occupation of land, stipends for village officials, mutual aid activities within the village, and organizations obligated to pay taxes and labor duties to the colonial authorities.

インドネシアのジャワ，マドゥラ，バリ島などで〈ムラ〉を指す。サンスクリットで地方を意味するデーシャdeśaを語源とする言葉で，マタラム朝(8～10世紀)のジャワに導入されたと考えられる。現在，インドネシア語では，カンプンが一般に集落を意味するのに対し，デサは行政村の意味で使われることが多い。明確な資料の存在する19世紀ジャワについていえば，デサは地縁的性格の濃い村落共同体であった。土地の共同占有，村役人のための職禄田，村内互助活動，植民地当局への租税納入･賦役義務団体などが当時のデサに見られた特徴であった。
