The westernmost city in Ibaraki Prefecture, on the left bank of the Tone River and the Watarase River. It was incorporated as a city in 1950. The central city area was the base of the Koga shogunate in the Middle Ages, and in the early modern period it flourished as a castle town for the Doi clan and other clans, a post town on the Nikko Kaido road, and a key point for water transportation. The Tohoku Main Line runs through the city, and National Route 4 continues from Kuki City, Saitama Prefecture, over the Tone River Bridge. After World War II, machinery, electrical appliances, clothing, and automobile parts industries developed in place of the traditional silk-reeling industry, and Western-style bamboo and Sarushima tea are its specialties. It serves as a satellite city of the metropolitan area, and many people commute to Tokyo. In September 2005, it merged with Miwa Town and Sowa Town in Sarushima County, and the city hall became the former Sowa Town Hall. The city suffered damage during the Great East Japan Earthquake. 123.58 km2 . 142,995 people (2010). Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
