Red-backed vole (Japanese name: red-backed vole)

Japanese: ヤチネズミ(谷地鼠) - ヤチネズミ（英語表記）red‐backed vole

A general term for the genus Clethrionomys of the family Muridae, but may also include the genus Aschizomys . In the strict sense, a vole is very similar to a field vole, but has a long tail and a red back. It is widely distributed in Asia, Europe, and central and northern North America, and is divided into more than eight species. It is 7-11.5 cm long, 2.5-6 cm long, and weighs 15-40 g. Its body is generally round, and its eyes and ears are slightly larger than those of a field vole. When it reaches adulthood, its molars develop roots and stop growing.

齧歯（げつし）目ネズミ科ヤチネズミ属Clethrionomysの総称であるが，別属のニイガタヤチネズミ属Aschizomysのものをも含めることがある。狭義のヤチネズミはハタネズミによく似るが尾が長く，背が赤い。アジア，ヨーロッパ，北アメリカの中･北部に広く分布し，8種以上に分けられている。体長7～11.5cm，尾長2.5～6cm，体重15～40g。体は全体に丸く，ハタネズミに比べ目や耳がやや大きく，成獣になると臼歯（きゆうし）に根ができ成長が止まる。
