Weberian apparatus

Japanese: ウェーバー器官 - うぇーばーきかん(英語表記)Weberian apparatus
Weberian apparatus
The hearing organ found in fish of the order Cypriniformes (carp, minnow, loach, characin, etc.) and order Siluriformes (catfish, gigas, etc.) consists of four small bone fragments located between the swim bladder and the inner ear, and the attached structures that connect these to the inner ear. Most of the small bone fragments are modified bones attached to the first to third vertebrae, but some are ossified from connective tissue, and each bone fragment is connected in a chain by ligaments. The bone fragment at the rear end contacts the outer wall of the swim bladder, and the bone fragment at the front end connects to the wall of the sac of the inner ear through the endolymphatic sinus.
