Durg is a city in the district of Durg in the southeastern part of Madhya Pradesh, central India. It is a complex city located at a key transportation hub connecting Bombay and Calcutta. Durg is the district capital with a population of 151,000, while Bhilainagar has a population of 386,000 (both as of 1991). It is a planned steel-producing city located about 15km east of Durg, developed with assistance from the Soviet Union from 1955. Today, the two cities form a single metropolitan area, although they are separate administrative districts. [Nakayama Shuichi]
