A historical book of the Old Testament. In Judaism it is considered one of the prophecies. Originally in one volume in the Hebrew manuscripts, it was first divided into two volumes in the Greek Septuagint, and was called Basileiōn (Regnorum) rather than Samuel. This division was continued in the Vulgate and is still in use today. The Book of Samuel tells the story of the founding of the kingdom of Israel. Its contents are divided into four main parts: (1) the birth of Samuel and his upbringing at the temple at Shiloh, (2) how David was summoned by Saul and eventually became king, (3) the story of King David and the history of royal succession, and (4) an additional section. The Book of Samuel contains many similarities, repetitions, and contradictions. There are different accounts of the duration of the monarchy (1 Samuel 9:1-10:16, 8, 10:17-27), and the story of David being introduced twice as king to Saul (1 Samuel 16, 17). There are two theories: the Book of Samuel was created from several continuous sources, and it is a compilation of independent stories from various legends, but the latter opinion is widely accepted. The sources for the Book of Samuel are old sources from before 800 BC and new sources from the late 8th century BC, and it is estimated that these were compiled into the form we know today around 550 BC.
