Estradiol - estradiol (English spelling)

It is a steroid hormone secreted from the ovaries of female vertebrates, and is a representative female hormone (estrogen, follicular hormone). Its amount varies with the menstrual cycle, and is secreted in large amounts in pregnant women. There are two isomers, 17α (alpha) and 17β (beta), but it is generally referred to as 17β-estradiol. It was discovered in pig ovaries by American biochemist Doisy in 1935. It is also found in the placenta and urine of pregnant women. It develops the female reproductive glands and causes secondary and tertiary sexual characteristics, but in mammals in particular, it causes estrus. 17β-estradiol or its derivatives are generally sold as female hormones, and are used for ovarian and uterine underdevelopment, menopausal symptoms, menstrual irregularities, menorrhagia, amenorrhea, menstrual pain, functional infertility, and senile vaginitis. Currently used low-dose oral contraceptives (low-dose pills) contain the synthetic follicular hormone ethinylestradiol and synthetic progesterone hormones such as desogestrel. Recently, 17β-estradiol has also been used to prevent and treat osteoporosis. Estradiol is one of the endocrine disrupting chemicals (so-called environmental hormones), and it has been reported that trace amounts of estradiol are detected in water environments and aquatic organisms (fish) through water quality surveys.

脊椎(せきつい)動物の雌の卵巣から分泌されるステロイドホルモンで、女性ホルモン（エストロゲン、卵胞ホルモン）の代表的なものである。その分泌量は月経周期に伴って変動を示し、妊婦では大量に分泌される。17α(アルファ)体および17β(ベータ)体の二つの異性体があるが、一般には17β-エストラジオールをさす。1935年アメリカの生化学者ドイジーがブタの卵巣から発見した。このほか胎盤、妊婦尿などから検出される。雌の生殖腺(せん)を発達させ、二次、三次性徴を表すが、とくに哺乳(ほにゅう)類では発情をおこさせる。一般に女性ホルモンとして発売されているものは17β-エストラジオール、またはこの誘導体であり、卵巣や子宮の発育不全をはじめ、更年期障害、月経不順、月経過多、無月経、月経痛、機能性不妊症、老年性腟(ちつ)炎などに用いられている。現在使用されている低用量経口避妊薬（低用量ピル）には、合成卵胞ホルモンであるエチニルエストラジオールとデソゲストレルなどの合成黄体ホルモンが配合されている。最近では、17β-エストラジオールは骨粗鬆症(こつそしょうしょう)の予防・治療にも用いられる。エストラジオールは、内分泌攪乱(かくらん)化学物質（いわゆる環境ホルモン）の一つであり、水環境や水生生物（魚類）から水質調査により微量検出されるとの報告がある。
