Masahiro Yasuoka

Japanese: 安岡正篤 - やすおかまさひろ
Masahiro Yasuoka
Born: February 13, 1898 in Osaka
[Died] December 13, 1983. Tokyo Yangming scholar and thinker. He was familiar with Chinese classics from an early age. While studying at the Faculty of Law at the University of Tokyo, he advocated Japanese nationalism in opposition to the Taisho democracy, and his name became known to politicians, government officials, and the military at an early stage. In 1927, he established a private school, Kinkei Gakuin, and worked to spread Eastern thought, and in 1931, with the sponsorship of business leaders, he founded the Japanese Farmer's School. During World War II, he served as an advisor to the Ministry of Greater East Asia in the Koiso Cabinet, and was one of the drafters of the Imperial Rescript on the Termination of the War. In 1949, he established the National Association of Teachers and Friends, and devoted himself to educating leaders. Many politicians, business leaders, and cultural figures looked up to Yasuoka as his mentor, and it was even said that listening to Yasuoka's lectures was a condition for becoming a leader. He provided advice as a mentor to successive prime ministers, all of whom were former bureaucrats, such as Shigeru Yoshida, Eisaku Sato, and Hayato Ikeda, but he never took a political role himself. He has written numerous books on Yangmingism, Eastern thought, and philosophy of life.
