Ise Sea

Japanese: 伊勢海 - いせのうみ
Ise Sea
The title of the Saibara piece. The title comes from the opening line, "Ise no Umi no...". It was known along with "Koromogae" as a representative piece of Ritsu music that was performed at banquets such as the Imperial Games at Chokin's Imperial Visit, but it fell out of use during the Muromachi period. In 1626 (Kan'ei 3) or 1683 (Ten'wa 3), it was revived by Yotsuji Suetsugu based on old scores, and became a model for subsequent Saibara revivals. The piece has a tonic of Hei-jyo and a five-beat rhythm. It is said to have been created by applying the melody of the Gagaku orchestra piece "Jusui-raku".
