Mangyan people - Mangyan people (English spelling)

Japanese: マンギャン族 - マンギャンぞく（英語表記）Mangyan

A general term for the mountain people of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The population is estimated at 20,000 to 30,000. Linguistically and ethnologically, they are divided into seven tribes. All of them speak Malayo-Polynesian languages, but they cannot understand each other. From the north, they are distributed in the following order: Iraya, Alanggan, Tadjawan, Batangan (Taobuid), Buhid, Hanunoo-Mangyan (Hanunoo), and Ratagnon. For most of these tribes, the word "Mangyan" means "human being."

フィリピンのミンドロ島山地民の総称。人口は2万から3万と推定される。言語学･民族学的には七つの種族に分けられる。いずれもマラヨ･ポリネシア語系の言語をもつが，互いに意味は通じない。北からイラヤ族，アランガン族，タジャワン族，バタンガン族(タオブイッド族)，ブヒッド族，ハヌノオ･マンギャン族(ハヌノオ族)，ラタグノン族の順に分布する。このうちの大半の種族にとって，〈マンギャン〉という語は〈人間〉を意味するという。
