A general term for the mountain people of Mindoro Island in the Philippines. The population is estimated at 20,000 to 30,000. Linguistically and ethnologically, they are divided into seven tribes. All of them speak Malayo-Polynesian languages, but they cannot understand each other. From the north, they are distributed in the following order: Iraya, Alanggan, Tadjawan, Batangan (Taobuid), Buhid, Hanunoo-Mangyan (Hanunoo), and Ratagnon. For most of these tribes, the word "Mangyan" means "human being." Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
