A passerine bird of the family Pelopidae. This family consists of only one species, the palm bird. Total length is about 18 cm. Both sexes have a grayish olive back, a slightly darker head, and a white underside with thick dark brown vertical stripes. They have a strong beak and strong legs. They have a fairly long tail. They are found only on the island of Hispaniola and its associated islands in the West Indies. They prefer open areas with tall trees scattered around, and are particularly common where palm trees grow. They live in small flocks of about 10 birds throughout the year, flying actively from tree to tree and feeding on small fruits, berries, shoots and buds.

スズメ目ヤシドリ科の鳥。この科はヤシドリ1種だけからなる。全長約18cm。雌雄とも背面は灰色がかったオリーブ色で，頭部はやや色が濃く，下面は白地に暗褐色の太い縦斑がある。くちばしはじょうぶで，脚も強い。尾はかなり長い。西インド諸島のイスパニオラ島とその付属小島に限って分布している。高い木の散在する開けた場所を好み，とくにヤシの木の生えているところに多い。1年を通じて10羽前後の小群をつくり，木から木へ活発に飛び歩いて，小型の果実，漿果（しようか），新芽やつぼみなどを食べている。
