Japanese: 御咎手鎖 - おとがめてぐさり
Punishment Handcuffs - Punishment Handcuffs

...An iron gourd-shaped bracelet that restrains the wrists and restricts the freedom of both arms. During the Edo period, it was used as a light punishment or pretrial detention method for commoners. Under the Shogunate law, handcuffs as a punishment were classified into three grades: 100 days, 50 days, and 30 days. For 100 days, the punishment was every other day, and for 50 days or less, the person was required to appear at the magistrate's office to have the seal (a piece of paper pasted on the narrow central part and stamped) changed. It could be substituted for a fine, and sometimes it was imposed in addition to a fine (double punishment).
