議場,舞台,競技場などにおいて,公式の発言者や登場人物の言説ないし所作を対象に,対立する陣営や観客席(外野席)から発せられるひやかし,あざけり,非難の言葉を指す。政治の世界,とりわけ公開の演説会場,国会の各種委員会や本会議においては,通例,その演説の内容や所作,賛成・反対の討論に対して弥次と怒号がとびかう。その最も劇的な場面がいわゆる強行採決である。弥次は対抗ないし応援の表現行為の一部であるが,他面では一種の即興的な批評行為でもある。
