A perennial plant of the Rutaceae family cultivated in Japan for medicinal and ornamental purposes, it can reach a height of 1m (illustration). It has a strong fragrance. The base is woody, and the roots are fleshy and pale yellowish white. The young stems are covered with long white hairs. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, and about 30cm long. There are 9-13 papery leaflets, ovate-lanceolate or ovate, 3-9cm long, slender and pointed at the tip, wedge-shaped at the base, sawtoothed at the margins, and hairy along the veins on the underside.
