Japanese: ハクセン - はくせん

A perennial plant of the Rutaceae family cultivated in Japan for medicinal and ornamental purposes, it can reach a height of 1m (illustration). It has a strong fragrance. The base is woody, and the roots are fleshy and pale yellowish white. The young stems are covered with long white hairs. The leaves are alternate, odd-pinnate, compound, and about 30cm long. There are 9-13 papery leaflets, ovate-lanceolate or ovate, 3-9cm long, slender and pointed at the tip, wedge-shaped at the base, sawtoothed at the margins, and hairy along the veins on the underside. In summer, racemes about 20cm long appear at the tips of the branches, and large flowers are produced.
