A city in the southeastern tip of Saitama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1972. It occupies alluvial lowlands between the Nakagawa and Ayasegawa rivers. Rice was the main crop, and onions and other vegetables were also cultivated, but in the late 1960s, an industrial complex was developed and textile, dyeing, machinery, metal, and other factories moved in. The Metropolitan Expressway runs through the city, and urbanization is remarkable. The Tsukuba Express opened in 2005. 18.02 km2 . Population: 82,977 (2010). 埼玉県南東端の市。1972年市制。中川と綾瀬川にはさまれた沖積低地を占める。米作を主とし,ネギなど野菜栽培が盛んであったが,1960年代後半に工業団地が造成され,繊維,染色,機械,金属などの工場が進出。首都高速道路が通じ,都市化が著しい。2005年つくばエクスプレスが開業。18.02km2。8万2977人(2010)。
