Alberta, in western Canada, is the country's largest oil and gas producing region. The hydrocarbon deposits in Alberta are broadly divided into two groups. One is distributed in a complex structure along the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains, and the other is distributed in a loose structure in the interior plains. Many gas fields have been discovered in the foothills, all of which are trapped in fault blocks including thrust faults. Representative gas fields include Turner Valley and Pincher Creek. In the plains, there are Paleozoic reef limestone oil deposits and Mesozoic sandstone gas deposits. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
