A fast breeder reactor of the Japan Atomic Energy Agency located at the northern tip of the Tsuruga Peninsula in Fukui Prefecture. It is a domestically developed prototype fast breeder reactor for power generation, which breeds plutonium fuel with high-speed neutrons and cools it with sodium. It was built for the purpose of demonstrating its reliability as a power plant and establishing sodium handling technology. It was completed in May 1991, achieved its first criticality in April 1994, and began generating electricity in August of the following year, but a sodium leak accident occurred in December and operation was halted. Test runs were resumed in May 2010, but a device fell inside the reactor in August, and operation was halted again. In December 2016, the decision was made to decommission the reactor. The name comes from Manjusri Bodhisattva. The official name is Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor Monju. →Fugen →Nuclear power plant [Additional information]MonjuSource: About Shogakukan Digital Daijisen Information | Legend |
